Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to form salt and water:

Acid  +  Base  --->  Salt  +  Water

Or in other words, the hydrogen ions, H+ in the acid react with the hydroxide ions, OH- in the alkali to form water:

H+  +  OH-  --->  H2O
